Age UK

Age UK
Age UK is a vitally important organisation in helping both individiuals and populations live longer better.

In many ways it epitomises Oliver Williamson's principle that complex problems cannot be solved by bureaucracies and markets but need a complex adaptive system and Age Uk is a complex adaptive system
defined in the following way .

“Certain nonlinear systems attracted the attentions of scholars as a potentially useful avenue for analyzing natural and social phenomena.  They are commonly described as being Complex, because their behavior is defined to a large extent by local interactions between their components.  When such systems are capable of evolution they are also known as Complex Adaptive Systems.”

There is of course a bureaucratic structure with a Chief Executive and a Board and a budget but its strength lies in the way that local branches of Age UK evolve in their individual ways depending on their local history, geography or politics
