DEMENTIA IS A TREATABLE CONDITION, IMPROVING LIFE FOR AFFECTED PEOPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES
The evidence is strong that the same factors that increase the risk of dementia also determine the rate of decline and as described in the book – Increase Your Brainability; reduce the risk and impact of dementia At present many people are being told “sorry, there is no treatment” by which the clinicians mean no drug treatment whereas the evidence from the Lancet Commission is that people with dementia are in equal, if not greater, need of good hearing, good vision, plenty of challenging interaction and the other factors that reduce risk.
Every Neighbourhood will be helped to develop a Dementia Impact Reduction system with the following objectives

Every Neighbourhood will be helped to develop a Dementia Impact Reduction system with the following objectives
- To inform everyone given the diagnosis of dementia on the steps they can take to minimise further brain damage
- To educate all professionals about the ability to slow the rate of decline
- To provide people in the family with information how they can mitigate the impact and adverse effects of the condition and the way the diagnosis has been communicated
- To minimise the incidence of drug side effects
- To increase physical activity among people with dementia
- To prevent and reduce isolation of people with dementia
- To support the development of communities of people with dementia and their families
